Fukuoka Prefecture is located in northeastern Kyushu and is an important link for travel between Kyushu and Honshu Islands. The distance between Fukuoka and Tokyo is 1,100km (686 miles), whereas Seoul is only about half the distance at 540km (340 miles). Even Shanghai is closer than Tokyo at 870km (544 miles) from Fukuoka. Because of its proximity to the Korean Peninsula and the Chinese Continent, Fukuoka has long been an international district playing an important role as a gateway to foreign countries.
Fukuoka City, the planned site of the July 2000 Summit's Meeting of Finance Ministers, is located at the center of the semicircle-shaped Fukuoka Plains. The City faces the Sea of Genkai with the Sefuri and Sangun mountain ranges to its back. The area around the coastal region is part of the Genkai Quasi-National Park.
