Renewable Energy Workshop
hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan
"to Promote the Use of Renewable Energy:
What Irena Can Do for Us"

Introduction of Workshop (February 10, 2011)

January 31, 2011

Newly established international organization "International Renewable Energy Agency ("IRENA")" aims to promote the widespread and increased adoption and use of renewable energy with a view to sustainable development. Acting as the global voice for renewable energy, IRENA will facilitate access to all relevant renewal energy information, including technical data, economic data and renewable resources potential data. IRENA will share experiences of best practices and lessons learned regarding policy frameworks, capacity-building projects, available finance mechanisms and renewable energy related to energy efficiency measures.

Renewable Energy is one of the important energy in terms of energy security as well as development and realization of low carbon society. With a ratification of IRENA Statute by Japan, we will commit ourselves to this new international organization "IRENA" and also international cooperation by member countries. We would also like to see Japanese industries' contribution and support to the renewable energy.

Because of the initiatives to the IRENA taken by many European countries, comparing to number of signatories of IRENA statute, currently European and African countries are more active than Asia Pacific countries. And we, as a leading IRENA supporting country in Asia-Pacific, would like to promote and cooperate with those countries.

In this regard, we are aiming to introduce the IRENA not only to the Japanese but also to neighbor countries and also to update on current renewable projects and to educate about IRENA's role.
