On April 28, commencing at 2:50 p.m. local time (April 29, 3:50 a.m. JST), for approximately 20 minutes, Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, who is visiting New York, U.S. to attend the Third Session of the Preparatory Committee for the Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), held an exchange of views with Dr. Joshua W. Walker, President / Chief Executive Officer of Japan Society. This was followed by a tour of Japan Society from 3:10 p.m. (4:10 a.m. JST) for approximately 20 minutes. The overview of the visit is as follows. Mrs. IWAYA Satoko, spouse of the Foreign Minister, was also present at the meeting.

  1. In the exchange of views, Minister Iwaya conveyed his expectation for the continued success of Japan Society, which serves as a vital hub for cultural outreach and intellectual exchange related to Japan. President Walker expressed his intention to make further efforts to promote Japanese culture and strengthen Japan-U.S. relations.
  2. Minister Iwaya toured Japan Society, and received an explanation of the activities of the Japan Society from President Walker and others. Minister Iwaya, visiting the Japan Society for the first time in ten years, expressed his desire to visit again in the future. Minister Iwaya also expressed his renewed appreciation for the contributions of Japan Society and the dedication of its staff and stated his hope for the further development of a wide range of fields, the strengthening of people-to-people exchanges, and ultimately, the further enhancement of Japan-U.S. relations.
