On March 19 (local time), Mr. MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, during his visit to Wasington D.C., exchanged views with the Honorable J.D. Vance, Vice President of the United States, who was seated next to him at the dinner reception hosted by U.S. President Trump. The overview of the meeting is as follows:

  1. They thoroughly exchanged views on recent international situations, particularly the situation in East Asia and China's activities.
  2. Minister MOTEGI emphasized that as Japan and China are neighboring countries, there are various challenges and issues, and that precisely because of that, it is necessary to resolve issues through dialogue, and Japan is always open to dialogue.
  3. Furthermore, Minister MOTEGI explained that issues such as Taiwan, attempts to unilaterally change the status quo by force or coercion in the East China Sea and South China Sea, and China's export restrictions affect not only Japan but also the United States. They concurred to further expand Japan-U.S. cooperation on strengthening supply chains, including rare earth, and on economic security issues.
  4. The dinner reception, which included a musical band, was held in a harmonious atmosphere, allowing for fruitful discussions, and was a wonderful event.
