On July 15, from 8:30 a.m. for approximately 30 minutes, Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide attended the video teleconference meeting with members of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the U.S.-Japan Business Council (USJBC) including Mr. Douglas Peterson, Chairman of the USJBC. The overview of the conference is as follows:

  1. At the outset, touching upon the importance of the Japan-U.S. economic relations for global prosperity, Chairman Peterson commended Japan’s policies on expansion of trade and investment between Japan and the U.S., digital transformation, climate change and others. He also expressed his support for Japan's efforts towards holding safe and secure Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games.

  2. In response, referring to the significance of the Japan-U.S. Alliance and the long term goal of net zero by 2050, Prime Minister Suga explained four "driving forces of growth" (green, digital, creating vibrant communities, measures for declining birthrate) that form "robust Japan" as a precondition for the Japan-U.S. Alliance to fully function, and expressed his determination to transform Japan's socioeconomic structure. He also stated that he is determined to realize safe and secure Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games by taking thorough countermeasures against COVID-19 infection.

  3. In addition, both sides had a meaningful exchange of views on policies in the fields of digital, climate change and energy, trade, as well as countermeasures against the COVID-19.
