On August 17, commencing at 5:15 p.m. (local time) for approximately 40 minutes, Mr. Taro Kono, Minister for Foreign Affairs, held a meeting with his counterpart Ambassador Robert Lighthizer, United States Trade Representative, during his trip to Washington, D.C. The overview of the meeting is as follows.

  1. Foreign Minister Kono and Ambassador Lighthizer widely discussed measures to strengthen Japan- U.S. trade and economic relations.
  2. Both sides discussed work plans to move forward efforts in the trade area and shared the view on accelerating discussions under the Japan-U.S. Economic Dialogue in order to address bilateral trade issues as well as to consider appropriate means to strengthen free and fair trade and promote high trade and investment standards.
  3. Foreign Minister Kono and Ambassador Lighthizer also discussed common concerns and collaboration to tackle unfair trade practices in third countries.
