Meeting between Foreign Minister Kamikawa and the Honourable Mary Ng, Minister of Export Promotion, International Trade and Economic Development of Canada

On July 17th, commencing at 12:00 a.m. local time (7:00 p.m. Japan Time), for approximately 15 minutes, Foreign Minister KAMIKAWA Yoko held a meeting with the Honourable Mary Ng, Minister of Export Promotion, International Trade and Economic Development of Canada during her visit to Italy to attend the G7 Trade Ministers' Meeting. The overview of the meeting is as follows.
- At the outset, Minister Kamikawa pointed out that we realized that Canada sees the Indo-Pacific region as the new key to its growth and is keen to strengthen cooperation with Japan and that the good trade and investment relationship between the two countries is reaching new heights against the backdrop of a recent high level of interest in both public and private sectors in energy security and supply chain resilience. Minister Kamikawa then welcomed the steady progress in cooperation on the “Japan-Canada Action Plan for contributing to a Free and Open Indo-Pacific region”, including on Women, Peace and Security (WPS).
The two Ministers then confirmed that they will continue to work together to address the challenges facing the international community as important strategic partners in the Indo-Pacific region that share universal values. - The two Ministers also concurred to continue to work together to promote bilateral cooperation on economic issues, including building a full value chain for electric vehicles and LNG production, and confirmed that they will work closely in the international fora including the G7 and CPTPP.
- Furthermore, the two Ministers confirmed that they will continue to cooperate among like-minded countries including the G7, to address economic security challenges, including the issue of overcapacity.
- Lastly, considering that Canada assumes the G7 Presidency next year, while Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, takes place in Japan, the two Ministers concurred to work together even further to ensure these successes.
