On September 9th, commencing at 4:30 p.m. for approximately 30 minutes, Mr. HOSAKA Yasushi, Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs, received a courtesy call by Ms. Suzanne Puanani Vares-Lum, President of the East-West Center. The overview is as follows:

  1. At the outset, Parliamentary Vice-Minister Hosaka welcomed Ms. Suzanne Puanani Vares-Lum on her visit to Japan, and expressed his gratitude for the contribution by President Vares-Lum and the East-West Center for promoting people-to-people and intellectual exchanges in Asia-Pacific region and strengthening the Japan-U.S. relationship.
  2. Ms. Vares-Lum explained the center’s activities, and both sides exchanged views on the center’s current efforts and possible future cooperation.

The East-West Center was established in 1960 by the U.S. Federal Government to conduct academic research and education in the Asia-Pacific region. The East-West Center conducts research, education and human resource development, and the organization of conferences and seminars in a wide range of fields, including politics, economics, society, culture, and environmental issues, and contributes significantly to deepening mutual understanding and building friendly relations between the United States and countries in the Asia-Pacific region.
