On July 7, Mr. MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, who is visiting Ankara, Türkiye to attend the NATO Summit, held separate meetings with the Honorable Marco Rubio, Secretary of State of the United States of America, and H.E. Cho Hyun, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea (ROK).

  1. Minister MOTEGI and Secretary Rubio exchanged views on the situation surrounding Iran. Minister MOTEGI welcomed the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed by the United States and Iran and emphasized the importance of reaching a final agreement as soon as possible and ensuring free and safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz without additional costs.
  2. They also exchanged views on the regional situation in the Indo-Pacific, including issues related to China.
  3. They confirmed that they would continue to maintain close communication in responding to developments in the international situation in the Indo-Pacific and the Middle East.

Japan-ROK Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

  1. The two Ministers, bearing in mind future Japan-ROK-U.S. trilateral Foreign Ministers’ meetings, discussed the importance of strategic coordination between Japan and the ROK as well as among Japan, the ROK and the U.S.
  2. The two Ministers also followed up on the outcomes of the last Japan-ROK summit meeting and concurred to continue close communication between the two governments, including through the active promotion of the two leaders’ “shuttle diplomacy.”
