On April 16, 2025, commencing at 4:15 p.m., for approximately 30 minutes, Mr. ISHIBA Shigeru, Prime Minister of Japan, received a courtesy call from the delegation of the United States Congressional Study Group on Japan (CSGJ). The overview of the courtesy call is as follows.

  1. At the outset, Prime Minister Ishiba welcomed the delegation of the CSGJ on their visit to Japan.
  2. In addition, Prime Minister Ishiba expressed his gratitude for the cooperation of the United States Congress members amidst increasing the importance of the Japan-U.S. Alliance, and stated his intention to cooperate with them to realize a Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP).
  3. Both sides exchanged views on the importance of the Japan-U.S. security, as well as on regional issues including the situation in the Indo-Pacific.
  4. Prime Minister Ishiba mentioned that Japanese companies significantly contribute to the U.S. economy through investment and job creation. Both sides exchanged views on the importance of further cooperation in the Japan-U.S. economic relations.
  5. Prime Minister Ishiba also asked for continued understanding and cooperation of the participating members of the U.S. Congress regarding the immediate resolution of the abductions issue.

  • Established in 1993 to focus on Japan, the bipartisan U.S. Congressional group now consists of approximately 80 current members of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives.
  • The group promotes understanding of Japan in the U.S. Congress and builds personal connections between the U.S. Congress and Japan through holding various lectures and study sessions.
