On January 21, commencing at 7:30 p.m. (local time. 9:30 a.m., January 22, Japan time.) for approximately 90 minutes, Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, who is visiting Washington D.C. hosted a dinner with Senator William Hagerty, United States Senate. The overview of the meeting is as follows:

  1. Minister Iwaya stated that Japan-U.S. relations, which had become stronger than ever, is based on multi-layered people to people exchanges including legislative exchanges between the two countries. He also stated that he would like to further strengthen the Japan-U.S. relations, which is the foundation of peace and prosperity in the region and the international community, and cooperate with Senator Hagerty.
  2. The two sides exchanged views on regional affairs in the Asia Pacific region. The two sides also exchanged views on coordination among like-minded countries, including Japan-Australia-India-U.S., Japan-U.S.-Republic of Korea (ROK), and Japan-U.S.-Philippines.
  3. The two sides also exchanged views on the economy including in the energy sector and reaffirmed the importance of Japan-U.S. economic relations, including investments by Japanese companies in the U.S.
  4. Minister Iwaya reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to elevate the Japan-U.S. relations to a new height and expressed his expectation for continued support from U.S. Congress.
