Meeting between Minister for Foreign Affairs Iwaya and U.S. National Security Advisor Waltz

On January 21, commencing at 4:30 p.m. (local time. 6:30 a.m. January 22, Japan time.) for approximately 15 minutes, Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, who is visiting Washington D.C., held a meeting with the Honorable Michael George Glen Waltz, National Security Advisor (NSA) to the President of the United States of America. The overview of the meeting is as follows.
- At the outset, Foreign Minister Iwaya congratulated NSA Waltz on his assumption of the position. The two sides concurred to work closely together to continue elevating the Japan-U.S. Alliance to new heights to realize a free and open Indo-Pacific.
- Minister Iwaya stated that he would like to advance cooperation to further strengthen Japan-U.S. Alliance deterrence and response capabilities.
- The two sides also exchanged views on the economy and affirmed the importance of Japan-U.S. economic relations, including investments by Japanese companies in the U.S. and economic security.
- The two sides concurred on the importance of further developing coordination of like-minded countries, including Japan-Australia-India-U.S., Japan-U.S.-Republic of Korea (ROK), and Japan-U.S.-Philippines.
- The two sides exchanged views on regional issues such as policies toward North Korea including on the nuclear and missile issues and issues related to China. Minister Iwaya asked for NSA Waltz’s continued understanding and cooperation toward the immediate resolution of the abductions issue and gained full support from NSA Waltz.
