On December 17, commencing at 3:00 p.m. for approximately 20 minutes, Mr. NAGASHIMA Akihisa, Special Advisor to the Prime Minister, received a delegation of Japanese American youth, who were invited to Japan under the Kakehashi Project, one of the Japan’s Friendship Ties Programs. A summary of the courtesy call is as follows.

  1. At the outset, Special Advisor to the Prime Minister Nagashima welcomed the group, and stated that the Japan-U.S. alliance was very important not only for security and the economy but also in many other fields such as education, science and technology, culture, and people-to-people exchange.
  2. Special Advisor to the Prime Minister Nagashima also hoped that they learned the realities of the atomic bombings in Hiroshima, Okinawa’s history, and others through their visit to these prefectures and that they deepened further their understanding of Japan. He also hoped that they would continue to contribute as a "Kakehashi" or ‘bridge’ to connect Japan and the U.S., as well as among their respective Japanese and Japanese American communities.
  3. The group expressed their gratitude for the invitation to Japan and asked Special Advisor to the Prime Minister Nagashima questions about the Japan-U.S. alliance and others.

The purpose of KAKEHASHI Project is to increase the interest in and understanding of Japan among outstanding young leaders in the North American region. By having them engage in activities that make the most of their visit experience, it aims to expand an interest in, understanding of, and support for Japan. The project promotes participants' understanding of Japan's politics, economy, society, culture, history, and foreign policy in accordance with their areas of expertise and interest, and enhances their external communication about Japan.
