Japan-United States of America Relations

On January 12th, commencing at 0:55 p.m. (local time, 2:55 a.m. on January 13th, Japan time) for approximately 30 minutes, Ms. KAMIKAWA Yoko, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, who was visiting Washington D.C., held a meeting with the Honorable Jake Sullivan, National Security Advisor to the President of the United States of America. The overview of the meeting is as follows.

  1. Minister Kamikawa first expressed her appreciation for the cordial messages of sympathy from the U.S. following the damage of the Noto Peninsula Earthquake and that as the world faces a historic turning point, the role of the Japan-U.S. Alliance is large and that she would like to exchange views to further strengthen the Japan-U.S. relations. In response, NSA Sullivan expressed his deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the disaster.
  2. The two sides exchanged their views on Prime Minister Kishida’s official visit to the U.S. scheduled for early this year and concurred on continuing to closely cooperate for the success of the event.
  3. The two sides exchanged their views on the situation in Israel and Palestine, the situation in Ukraine, responses to issues related to China and responses to North Korea. The two sides concurred on strengthening coordination between Japan and the U.S. on various issues facing the international society. The two sides also confirmed to further strengthen the deterrence and response capabilities of the Japan-U.S. Alliance, looking ahead to Prime Minister Kishida’s official visit to the U.S.
