Japan-United States of America Relations

On August 31, commencing at around 9:00 a.m. for approximately 25 minutes, Mr. Taro Kono, Minister for Foreign Affairs, held a telephone talk with the Honorable Rex W. Tillerson, Secretary of State of the United States of America. The overview of the telephone talk is as follows.

1. Following the telephone talk on the evening of August 30 between Mr. Shinzo Abe, Prime Minister of Japan, and the Honorable Donald Trump, President of the United States of America, Minister Kono explained that he held telephone talks with the foreign ministers of the Republic of Korea, the United Kingdom, Australia, Israel and Egypt from August 29 to 30. The two sides exchanged views on future responses.

2. Minister Kono stated that Japan supported the U.S.’s stance that all options are on the table. Both sides confirmed that Japan and the U.S. will take a resolute stance to ensure North Korea will not conduct further provocative actions. Moreover, both sides confirmed that, in order to take leadership in the international community’s efforts to increase pressure on North Korea, Japan and the U.S. will continue to workclosely together, including pursuing a new United Nations Security Council resolution, and continue to urge China and Russia to play greater roles.

3. In addition, Minister Kono conveyed his sympathy regarding the devastation caused by Hurricane Harvey, and stated that Japan stands ready to provide assistance. In response, Secretary Tillerson expressed his gratitude.
