Japan-U.S. Summit Telephone Talk
On January 7, commencing at around 7:35 a.m. for approximately 20 minutes, Mr. Shinzo Abe, Prime Minister of Japan, held a telephone talk with The Honorable Barack H. Obama, President of the United States of America. The overview of the talk is as follows.
1. The two leaders shared the view that the recent provocative action by North Korea is unacceptable, and both Japan and the United Sates will lead the international community, including at the United Nations Security Council They reconfirmed that the United States is firmly committed to defending Japan withevery possible means.
2. Furthermore, Prime Minister Abe explained that as a result of the recent agreement between Japan and the Republic of Korea (ROK), it was confirmed that the issue of comfort women is resolved finally and irreversibly, and expressed gratitude for the understanding and cooperation of the United States. In response, President Obama expressed his respect for Prime Minister Abe’s courage and resolve, and stated that cooperation between Japan, the United States and the ROK on peace and stability will be strengthened as a result of this decision.
