Japan-U.S. Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

On April 19, commencing at around 8:00 a.m. (local time) for approximately 40 minutes, Mr. Taro Kono, Minister for Foreign Affairs, during his visit to Washington D.C., the United States, held a Japan-U.S. Foreign Ministers’ Meeting with the Honorable Mike Pompeo, Secretary of State of the United States. The overview of the meeting is as follows.
- The two foreign ministers confirmed that Japan and the United States would coordinate closely for the success of Prime Minister Abe’s visit to the United States from April 26th to 27th and President Trump’s State Visit to Japan from May 25th to 28th.
- Regarding the situation in North Korea, the two foreign ministers closely aligned their future policies towards the resolution of the abductions, nuclear, and missile issues, taking into account the recent situation following the second U.S.-North Korea Summit. The two foreign ministers shared the view on full implementation of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolutions and reconfirmed that Japan and the United States, as well as among Japan, the United States, and the ROK, will continue to coordinate closely. The two foreign ministers reaffirmed that Japan and the United States will continue to work together towards the early resolution of the abductions issue.
- Minister Kono explained the outcomes of his recent visit to China, and the two foreign ministers shared the view on the importance of urging China to make further contributions to peace, security, and prosperity of the region and the international community.
- The two foreign ministers also exchanged views on other regional issues.
