Japan-U.S Foreign Ministers’ Telephone Talk

On July 29, commencing at 9:30 a.m. for approximately 30 minutes, Mr. Fumio Kishida, Minister for Foreign Affairs, held a telephone talk with the Honorable Rex W. Tillerson, Secretary of State of the United States of America. The overview of the talk is as follows.
- Minister Kishida and Secretary Tillerson shared the view that North Korea's provocative actions including the launch of an ICBM-class ballistic missile on late July 28 are totally unacceptable. The two sides also shared the recognition that they need to apply maximum pressure on North Korea.
- In addition, Minister Kishida explained Japan's autonomous measures announced on July 28, and Secretary Tillerson welcomed this. Furthermore, both sides confirmed that Japan and the United States will work closely together to adopt a new United Nations Security Council resolution that includes strict measures, and to urge the involvement of China and Russia.
- Moreover, Minister Kishida and Secretary Tillerson shared the understanding that, in order to deter the threat of North Korea, it is important that Japan and the United States jointly push forward concrete actions to enhance the defense posture and capabilities, and reaffirmed the importance of the extended deterrence of the United States.
