Japan-U.S. Foreign Ministers’ Telephone Talk

On May 29, commencing at 11:45 a.m. for approximately 25 minutes, Mr. Fumio Kishida, Minister for Foreign Affairs, held a telephone talk with the Honorable Rex W. Tillerson, Secretary of State of the Unites States of America. The overview is as follows.
- Minister Kishida and Secretary Tillerson shared the recognition that the repeated provocations by North Korea including the ballistic missile launch on May 29 are totally unacceptable and affirmed that, based on the outcome of the G7 Summit and the Japan-U.S. Summit Meeting that was held on that occasion, they will cooperate to strengthen pressure on North Korea and that the close coordination between Japan and the United States and among Japan, the United States and Republic of Korea including at the United Nations is important. In addition, the two sides shared the view that, in order to deter North Korea, Japan and the United States will take concrete actions to enhance the Japan-U.S. defense posture and capacity.
- Moreover, the two sides shared the view on the importance of the roles of China and Russia in dealing with the issues regarding North Korea, and affirmed that Japan and the United States will continue to urge China and Russia to play greater roles.
