On Monday, April 10, commencing at 9:25 a.m. for approximately 30 minutes, Mr. Fumio Kishida, Minister for Foreign Affairs, who is visiting Italy to attend the G7 Foreign Ministers' Meeting, held a Japan-U.S. Foreign Ministers' Meeting with the Honorable Rex W. Tillerson, Secretary of State of the United States of America. The overview of the meeting is as follows. 

1 Opening remarks

Secretary Tillerson stated that he is happy to have been able to meet Minister Kishida many times in about two months since his appointment, and this is something that demonstrates the strength of the Japan-U.S. alliance. Minister Kishida replied that Secretary Tillerson's recent visit to Japan demonstrated the strength of the Japan-U.S. alliance. The two sides shared the view that coordination among the G7 countries and between Japan and the United States is important while they face difficult issues, such as the situation of Syria and North Korea.

2 Syria situation

Minister Kishida explained that Japan supports the United States' determination to try to take responsibility for halting the proliferation and use of chemical weapons, and Secretary Tillerson expressed gratitude for Japan's expression of clear support. The two sides confirmed that Japan and the United States will continue to coordinate.

3 Regional situation

Minister Kishida and Secretary Tillerson exchanged views on regional affairs, particularly with regard to North Korea, which continues to take provocative actions. Secretary Tillerson explained the U.S.-China Summit Meeting which was recently held, and stated that the United States' policy on North Korea does not change. Minister Kishida and Secretary Tillerson reconfirmed their view that in dealing with the issue of North Korea, China has an extremely important role, and close coordination between Japan and the United States and among Japan, the United States and the Republic of Korea (ROK) is necessary. 

4 Japan-U.S. relations

Secretary Tillerson stated that the next week's visit to Japan by the Honorable Mike Pence, Vice President of the United States, will be a good opportunity to strengthen the Japan-U.S. Alliance. Minister Kishida explained that he also intends to proactively contribute to making the Japan-U.S. Economic Dialogue meaningful.
