Foreign Minister MOTEGI shaking hands with Canadian Foreign Minister ANAND

On November 11, commencing at 5:10 p.m. local time (November 12, 7:10 a.m. JST) for approximately 20 minutes, Mr. MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a Foreign Ministers’ Meeting with the Honourable Anita ANAND, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada, during his visit to Niagara, Canada, to attend the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting. The overview of the meeting is as follows:

  1. At the outset, Minister Motegi expressed his respect for Canada's leadership as this year's G7 President and stated his intention to work closely with Minister Anand, including discussions at the G7 Foreign Ministers' Meeting, going forward. Minister Anand stated her intention to further strengthen bilateral cooperation across various areas.
  2. Ministers concurred to cooperate closely towards realizing a "Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP)", building on the "Japan-Canada Action Plan for contributing to a free and open Indo-Pacific region."
  3. Both Ministers reaffirmed their commitment to the early signing of the Agreement concerning Transfer of Defense Equipment and Technology and the Treaty on Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters, which have been agreed upon in-principle, to promote cooperation in areas of security and rule of law.
  4. Minister Motegi welcomed the commencement of Canadian LNG supply to Asia this summer. Ministers concurred to promote Japan-Canada cooperation in the economic field, including LNG cooperation.
  5. Ministers discussed a broad range of regional and international issues, such as their policies toward North Korea including the nuclear and missile issues as well as the abductions issue.
