On April 5, commencing at around 1:40 p.m. (local time) for approximately 25 minutes, Mr. Taro Kono, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, during his visit to Dinard, French Republic to attend the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, held a Japan-Canada Foreign Ministers’ Meeting with the Honorable Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada. The overview of the meeting is as follows.

1. The ministers exchanged views on further fortifying the bilateral relationship, in light of this year’s 90th anniversary of Japan-Canada diplomatic relations (Note)Open a New Window.

2. Building on the achievements of last year’s G7 of which Canada held the presidency, the foreign ministers confirmed that Japan and Canada would address various issues facing the international community and work closely to make this year’s G20 Osaka Summit a success.

3. Minister Freeland explained the current situation concerning the issue of Canadians detained in China. The ministers reiterated the importance of the rule of law, including inthis issue.

4. The ministers also exchanged views regarding the regional situation, including issues regarding regarding North Korea.

(Note) 2018 marks the 90th anniversary of Japan’s establishment of a legation in Canada, while 2019 marks the 90th anniversary of Canada’s establishment of a legation in Japan. For this reason, last year and this year are considered the 90th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and Canada.
