  1. From October 28th to November 3rd, the FY 2024 Local Staff Training Program in Japan was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other sites.
  2. 60 local staff members from 50 countries working at Japan’s overseas missions such as Embassies and Consulates participated in this training program, and aimed to improve their skill in areas such as public diplomacy and consular affairs.
(24 participants from the Asia and Oceania, 14 from North America and Latin America and the Caribbean, 15 from Europe, and 7 from the Middle East and Africa)
  3. This training also included lectures on Japanese food culture and manners, visits to the Olympic Museum, and the National Stadium, tea ceremony experience at Tokyo Tower, a visit to Meiji Jingu, and the Honjo Disaster Prevention Center among others, as well as lectures by the relevant bureaus of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. On the final day of the training, participants were given a lecture on food culture by the culinary expert Yoshiharu Doi. These diverse training sessions were extremely meaningful for the participants.
  4. Local staffs are a valuable and indispensable asset in conducting Japan’s diplomacy, particularly the activities of overseas diplomatic missions. The 60 local staff members who participated in the training were selected from among the approximately 5,600 local staffs at Japan’s overseas missions with recognition of their outstanding performance.
It is expected that the participating local staff will further contribute to the work of the missions and accordingly strengthen Japan’s diplomatic activities by deepening their understanding of the systems and policies concerning the various tasks of overseas missions, and by acquiring the latest knowledge and information about Japan directly.
It is also expected that this training will vitalize the activities of Japan’s overseas missions at large not only by developing the capacities of the participating local staff, but also by sharing the knowledge gained in the training with all local staff at overseas missions upon their engagement in their daily work at the front lines of Japanese diplomacy.
