Japan-Oman Summit Telephone Call

On August 10, commencing at 5:00 p.m. for approximately 20 minutes, Ms. TAKAICHI Sanae, Prime Minister of Japan, held a summit telephone call with H.M. Sultan Haitham bin Tariq bin Taimur Al Said, Sultan of Oman.
- At the outset, Prime Minister TAKAICHI stated that, as the situation surrounding Iran has reached a critical phase, it is immensely beneficial to closely communicate with Sultan Haitham. She expressed her respect for Oman’s active diplomatic efforts, including its continued coordination with Iran toward the re-opening of the Strait of Hormuz, as well as Sultan Haitham’s visit to Qatar yesterday. She further emphasized that it is important to ensure the early de-escalation and to steadily resolve various issues including the nuclear issue, in accordance with the U.S.-Iran Memorandum of Understanding, stating that Japan will continue to make every diplomatic effort to foster the necessary environment.
- In addition, Prime Minister TAKAICHI stated that it is important to restore free and safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz without additional costs as soon as possible, and that, to this end, it is necessary to engage in close consultations on this matter with the international community, including the sstates using the Strait of Hormuz.
- In response, Sultan Haitham explained the current state of talks between Oman and Iran as well as Oman’s position. Sultan Haitham stated that Oman would engage in consultations with the states using the Strait of Hormuz on the future of the Strait, with a view to respecting their respective positions.
- The two leaders concurred on continuing close communication toward the peace and stability of the region including the Strait of Hormuz.
