On August 12, commencing at 4:20 p.m. for approximately 20 minutes, Ms. TAKAICHI Sanae, Prime Minister of Japan, held a summit telephone call with H.E. Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

  1. At the outset, Prime Minister TAKAICHI conveyed Japan’s position that, as the situation surrounding the Strait of Hormuz has reached a critical phase, and Iran has continued exchanges with the countries concerned toward reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, it is necessary to ease the current military tensions, achieve the early de-escalation of the situation, and steadily resolve various issues, including the nuclear issue, in accordance with the U.S.-Iran Memorandum of Understanding.
  2. Prime Minister TAKAICHI further underscored the importance of free and safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz without additional costs, and requested Iran to discuss closely on this matter with the international community, including the States using the Strait of Hormuz.
  3. Furthermore, Prime Minister Takaichi stated that ensuring the stability of the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait is crucial from the perspective of energy security, expressed concern about the recent declaration by the Houthis of a naval blockade against Saudi Arabia and their attacks such as on commercial vessels and oil-related facilities, and then, requested Iran to urge the Houthis to exercise restraint.
  4. In addition, Prime Minister Takaichi reiterated Japan’s request for an early resolution to the issue concerning the Japanese national released on bail in Iran last April.
  5. In response, President Pezeshkian explained Iran’s views, including the current status of its exchanges with Oman concerning the Strait of Hormuz and the outlook going forward. Regarding the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, President Pezeshkian explained that Iran is making efforts to resolve the issues, engaging in dialogue with Saudi Arabia.
  6. The two leaders concurred on continuing close communication toward the early de-escalation of the situation.
