Japan-United Arab Emirates Relations

On December 11th, commencing at 7:05 p.m. for approximately 15 minutes, Mr. KISHIDA Fumio, Prime Minister of Japan, held a telephone talk with H.H. Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates. The overview is as follows.

  1. At the outset, Prime Minister Kishida expressed his congratulations on the successful convening of the COP28 “United Nations World Climate Action Summit” under the UAE presidency. In response, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed expressed his gratitude for Japan’s position on the issue as well as for its assistance.
  2. Prime Minister Kishida, referring to the situation in the Gaza Strip, expressed that he is strongly concerned about the resumption of the fighting and that the combat has expanded to all areas of the Gaza Strip including the southern areas. Prime Minister Kishida also stated that to address the humanitarian situation on the ground, Japan has provided Emergency Grant Aid worth USD 10 million in areas such as food, water and medical care, and is also currently working on the early delivery of an additional USD 65 million of humanitarian assistance.
  3. In response, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed explained the UAE’s diplomatic efforts towards calming down the situation in the Gaza Strip and its humanitarian measures.
  4. The two leaders confirmed to maintain close cooperation between the two countries toward improving the humanitarian situation and calming down the situation, including at the UN Security Council.
  5. In addition, Prime Minister Kishida expressed his appreciation for the long years of stable supply of crude oil from the UAE to Japan and his hopes for the UAE to continue to play a leading role in the stabilization of the global crude oil market, including through increase in production. Furthermore, the two leaders concurred to further strengthen the cooperative relationship between Japan and the UAE in various fields under the Comprehensive and Strategic Partnership Initiative (CSPI).
