Japan-United Arab Emirates Foreign Ministers’ Telephone Talk

On October 10th, commencing at 4:10 p.m. local time (6:10 p.m. Japan Time) for approximately 20 minutes, Ms. KAMIKAWA Yoko, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, who is visiting Vietnam, held a telephone talk with H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), to discuss the situation surrounding Palestine and Israel. The overview is as follows:
- H.H. Sheikh Abdullah stated that he shares the grave concern about the situation on the ground, and explained UAE’s diplomatic efforts in the wake of the attack.
- Minister Kamikawa stressed that 1) she is paying close attention to the situation in the Gaza Strip, Palestine, with great concern, 2) she is deeply saddened by the attacks by Hamas and other Palestinian militants, which have claimed the lives of so many innocent civilians, and 3) it is important for the numerous civilians being held hostage to be released as soon as possible. Minister Kamikawa stated that attacks on, and kidnapping of, innocent civilians cannot be justified for any reason and that Japan strongly condemns such attacks and kidnappings.
- In addition, Minister Kamikawa expressed appreciation towards UAE’s diplomatic efforts on this matter, and stated that Japan has been communicating with the parties concerned in order to prevent further escalation of the situation and that Japan would like to continue working on this matter in cooperation with the UAE. Furthermore, the two ministers concurred on maintaining close cooperation, including in the UN Security Council.
