Japan-Egypt Relations

On October 17th, commencing at 21:00 p.m. for approximately 25 minutes, Mr. KISHIDA Fumio, Prime Minister of Japan held a telephone talk with H.E. Mr. Abdel-Fattah El-SISI, President of the Arab Republic of Egypt, to discuss the recent development in Israel and Palestine. The overview is as follows:

  1. At the outset, Prime Minister Kishida stressed that he is paying close attention to the recent development in Israel and Palestine with great concern, and that Japan has unequivocally condemned the recent terror attacks by Hamas and other Palestinian militants, especially the attacks on, and kidnapping of, innocent civilians, which cannot be justified for any reason.
  2. Prime Minister Kishida also expressed appreciation for Egypt’s diplomatic efforts in response to the deterioration of the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, and stated that Japan intend to implement emergency humanitarian aid of USD 10 million in total for citizens in the Gaza Strip through the international organizations, and that Japan will continue working on communicating with the parties concerned in order to calm down the situation and to improve the humanitarian situation in Gaza in cooperation with Egypt. Furthermore, Prime Minister Kishida stated that Japan would like to ask support from Egypt for Japanese nationals willing to depart from the Gaza Strip to Egypt.
  3. President El-Sisi explained Egypt’s diplomatic efforts in order to avoid humanitarian crisis. He also stated that Egypt will continue to work together for the safe departure of Japanese nationals.
  4. The two leaders concurred on maintaining close cooperation between the two countries and working on the improvement of the humanitarian situation, departure from Gaza, and calming down the situation.
