Japan-Algeria Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

On February 21, commencing at 4:00 p.m. (On February 21, 11:00 p.m., JST), for approximately 30 minutes, Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, during his visit to the Republic of South Africa for attending G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, held a bilateral meeting with H. E. Mr. Ahmed ATTAF, Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad and African Affairs of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria. The overview is as follows.
- At the outset, Minister IWAYA stated that Japan and Algeria have enjoyed long-term friendly relations and have witnessed economic cooperation developing in various areas in recent years, and he expressed his hope to work with Algeria, which currently holds the important responsibility as a member of the Security Council on regional and international issues in the international arena. In response, Minister Attaf expressed his aspiration to strengthen cooperation with Japan in various areas, including economic aspects in preparation for TICAD 9.
- They affirmed the importance of trust between the two countries and confirmed that the two countries will continue working together.
- Both sides also exchanged views on cooperation in the international arena and the situation surrounding the Middle East including Gaza and Syria, and agreed to continue to work together.
