On November 13th, commencing at 3:00 p.m. (local time; 5:00 a.m. on November 14, JST) for approximately 50 minutes, Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, who is visiting the Republic of Peru to attend the APEC Ministerial Meeting, had a meeting with representatives of Nikkei (Japanese immigrants and descendants) communities in Peru including Mr.Francisco Okada, President of the Peruvian Nikkei Association.

  1. At the beginning of the meeting, Minister Iwaya stated that this year marked the 125th anniversary of the first Japanese immigration to Peru in 1899, and he expressed his deep respect for the Peruvian Nikkei community, which has overcome many hardships to build prosperity and contributed to Peru's development. He also stated that the Peruvian Nikkei community, led by the Peruvian Nikkei Association, is making efforts to promote Japanese culture and language, and is engaged in various activities that benefit not only the Nikkei community but also the Peruvian society as a whole, and that he was pleased to have the opportunity to meet with them.
  2. Mr. Okada welcomed Minister Iwaya’s visit to Peru and expressed his hope that the Peruvian Nikkei community would continue to make efforts to strengthen friendly relations between the two countries.
