On November 13, commencing at 10:30p.m. (local time; 0:30 a.m. on November 14, Japan Standard Time) for approximately 15 minutes, Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, who is visiting the Republic of Peru to attend the APEC Ministerial Meeting, held a meeting with H. E. Mr. Elmer Schialer, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Peru, The overview of the meeting is as follows.

  1. At the outset, Minister Shailer welcomed Minister Iwaya's first visit to Peru and expressed his desire to strengthen bilateral relations with appreciation for Japan’s traditionally amicable relationship. In response, Minister Iwaya mentioned that Peru is a strategic partner and welcomed the fact that high-level visits between the two countries had become more active, such as the reciprocal visits of foreign ministers on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Peru last year, and that exchanges between the two countries were being promoted this year, which is the 125th anniversary of Japanese immigration to Peru.
  2. Minister Iwaya expressed his respect for Peru's leadership as APEC Chair President, and stated that Japan would continue to extend its cooperation for the success of APEC.
  3. To further strengthen bilateral relations, the two ministers confirmed that they will work closely together in various areas, including politics, economics, economic cooperation, and people-to-people exchange. In this context, Minister Schialer expressed his hope that various efforts including reciprocal visits of leaders and foreign ministers will strengthen bilateral relationship.
