Foreign Minister Hayashi's visit to the Peruvian Nikkei Association

On May 3, commencing at 4:30 p.m. (local time; 6:30 a.m. on May 4 JST), Mr. HAYASHI Yoshimasa, Minister for Foreign Affairs, who is visiting Lima, Peru, paid a visit to the Peruvian Nikkei Association and held meetings with Nikkei (Japanese immigrants and descendants) people in Peru. The overview is as follows.
- Minister Hayashi was welcomed by Mr. Juan Carlos NAKASONE OSHIRO, President of the Peruvian Nikkei Association, and other members, and met with representatives of the Nikkei community in Peru.
- Minister Hayashi expressed his respect for the Nikkei community, stating that he believes that the friendly relationship between Japan and Peru today exists as a result of the contributions the Nikkei community has made to Peruvian society as well as their efforts to win the trust of the Peruvian people, to promote Japanese culture and to bridge the two countries over a number of years despite many difficulties. After the conversation, Minister Hayashi conveyed the 2023 Spring Conferment of Decorations to two recipients.
- Minister Hayashi then attended the International Nikkei Dialogue hosted by the Peruvian Nikkei Association. At the dialogue, he expressed his respect for this valuable effort joined by the Nikkei communities from six Latin American countries (Peru, Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Mexico and Paraguay), and stated that the Government of Japan is willing to continue to implement various policies to strengthen bonds between the Nikkei communities in Latin America and Japan further.
- Minister Hayashi was also guided by President Nakasone on a tour of the Association's facilities, including the Japanese Garden and the Japanese Peruvian Emigration Archives.
