Japan-Mexico Relations
Dinner Hosted by State Minister for Foreign Affairs HORII with Ms, Mercado, Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs of the United Mexican States

On July 8, from 6:00 p.m. for approximately two hours, State Minister for Foreign Affairs HORII Iwao hosted a dinner with Ms. María Teresa Mercado Pérez, Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs of the United Mexican States, who is visiting Japan. They exchanged views on a wide range of topics, including Japan-Mexico relations. The summary is as follows:
- At the outset, State Minister HORII welcomed the visit to Japan of Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs Mercado. In response, Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs Mercado stated that although her visit had been brief, it had been a very fruitful one.
- State Minister HORII noted that Japan and Mexico not only share a historic friendship but are also strategic global partners who share fundamental values and principles. He emphasized that strengthening cooperation in areas such as energy and the economy, including economic security is essential to elevating bilateral relations to new heights, and expressed his expectation of working closely with Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs Mercado.
- In response, Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs Mercado stated that relations with Japan are important for Mexico and expressed her expectation of working together to further strengthen bilateral relations, taking advantage of the momentum of the high-level visits, next year’s 130th anniversary of Japanese immigration to Mexico and the 140th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Mexico in 2028, through deepening of cooperation in the various fields mentioned by State Minister HORII.
- Furthermore, a wide range of opinions were exchanged between the State Minister HORII and Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs Mercado, including on recent international situations.
