Japan-Mexico Relations
Meeting between Foreign Minister MOTEGI and Mr. Marcelo Luis Ebrard Casaubon, Secretary of Economy of the United Mexican States

On August 3, commencing at 5:30 p.m. local time (8:30 a.m. on August 4 Japan time) for 60 minutes, Mr. MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, who is currently visiting Mexico, held a meeting with Mr. Marcelo Luis Ebrard Casaubon, Secretary of Economy of the United Mexican States.
- Secretary Ebrard expressed his welcome for Minister MOTEGI’s visit to Mexico, noting that they have known each other for a long time, and stated that economic relations with Japan are very important for Mexico and that he wished to further strengthen relations with Japan. In response, Minister MOTEGI, while expressing his pleasure at meeting Secretary Ebrard again, stated that robust economic relations are the foundation of the bilateral relationship, and that under the current severe and complex international situation, he would like to elevate the Japan-Mexico bilateral relationship to new heights.
- Minister MOTEGI and Secretary Ebrard concurred that they will hold the first meeting of the Japan-Mexico High-Level Economic Dialogue within this fiscal year, in order to strengthen strategic dialogue in a wide range of areas including economic security, such as enhancing the resilience of supply chains. They also concurred on the continuation and further strengthening of cooperation in the energy sector, under the current situation in the Middle East, as well as on enhancing cooperation in the fields of science and technology, and infrastructure.
- Minister MOTEGI asked for cooperation in creating a favorable business environment for Japanese companies in Mexico, and Secretary Ebrard responded that Mexico attaches great importance to Japanese companies, always listens to their views, and will spare no effort in providing cooperation to further improve the business environment. They also concurred on further strengthening cooperation across a range of fields, including key infrastructure such as railways, as well as AI and data, while leveraging technologies of Japanese companies.
- Minister MOTEGI and Secretary Ebrard concurred on continuing to cooperate under the CPTPP (Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership) framework as well.
