1. About Nagoya Protocol
The Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization to the Convention on Biological Diversity was adopted on October 30 2010, during the 10th conference of the parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity held in Nagoya, Japan. This is an international instrument aiming at establishing procedures to ensure the fair and equitable access and benefit sharing (ABS) in using genetic resources. Japan signed the Protocol on May 11, 2011 and became a Party to the Protocol on August 20 2017.
2. Japan's Contribution
(a) Since becoming a Party to the Protocol in 2017, Japan has participated in various meetings under the Protocol.
(b) In addition to being one of the largest contributor to the Convention among the Parties, Japan also makes voluntary contributions including through Japan Biodiversity Fund and the Nagoya Protocol Implementation Fund (until 2010, which supported developing countries for the early entry into force and effective implementation of the Nagoya Protocol).
