Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs Yamada Hosted a Dinner for Dr. PAIK Jin-Hyun, President of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS)

On February 13, Mr. Kenji Yamada, Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs, hosted a dinner for Dr. PAIK Jin-Hyun, President of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) during the stay in Japan upon the invitation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan. The outline of the dinner is as follows.
- Parliamentary Vice-Minister Yamada stated that Japan will continue to promote the rule of law at sea and work together with the Tribunal in various ways. He also explained that Japan has been advancing assistance for capacity building on maritime law enforcement in Asia as part of such efforts.
- President Paik expressed his appreciation to the invitation extended by Japan and concurred on the importance of capacity building in the area of international law. In this regard, President Paik showed his gratitude to Japan for taking initiative to promote the rule of law, including the assistance for capacity building on maritime law enforcement and the contribution made by the Nippon Foundation to the Tribunal's capacity building activites.
- Parliamentary Vice-Minister Yamada and President Paik also had an active conversation on a range of issues, including the role of the Tribunal in the maintenance and reinforcement of the legal order at sea as well as the importance of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) as its basis.
