Meeting between Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs MATSUMOTO and Vice-President Carbonnier, ICRC

On August 22, commencing at 3:00 p.m. for approximately 25 minutes, MATSUMOTO Hisashi, Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a meeting in Yokohama with Dr. Gilles Carbonnier, Vice-President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), who is visiting Japan to participate in the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9). The summary of the meeting is as follows:
- At the outset, Parliamentary Vice-Minister MATSUMOTO welcomed Vice-President Carbonnier on his visit to Japan and expressed his respect for the dedication of ICRC staff working on the front lines of severe humanitarian crises, stating that Japan wishes to continue working together with the ICRC to improve the global humanitarian situation.
- In response, Vice-President Carbonnier expressed his appreciation for Japan’s assistance to date and his expectation that cooperation between Japan and the ICRC will be further strengthened.
- Parliamentary Vice-Minister MATSUMOTO also exchanged views on Japan’s contribution, based on his own experience as a doctor. In addition, the two exchanged views on issues such as the situation surrounding international humanitarian assistance and concurred on the importance of promoting compliance with international humanitarian law.
