Courtesy Call on Prime Minister ISHIBA by Mr. Philippe Lazzarini, Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA)

On May 27, commencing at around 08:20 a.m., for approximately 20 minutes, Prime Minister ISHIBA Shigeru received a courtesy call from Mr. Philippe Lazzarini, Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). The overview of the courtesy call is as follows.
- At the outset, Prime Minister ISHIBA expressed his respect for UNRWA’s efforts in supporting Palestine refugees and extended his condolences for the staff members who lost their lives. He also stated Japan will work on sustainably ensuring an enabling environment that allows humanitarian assistance activities.
- In response, Commissioner-General Lazzarini expressed his appreciation for Japan’s support to date and provided an overview of the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, the circumstances surrounding UNRWA, and the Agency’s efforts to improve its governance.
- Prime Minister ISHIBA and Commissioner-General Lazzarini reaffirmed their commitment to continue working closely together in supporting Palestine refugees facing a severe crisis.
