On August 20, commencing at 2:45 p.m. for approximately 60 minutes, Mr. MIYAJI Takuma, State Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a roundtable meeting with Dr. Ismahane Elouafi, Executive Managing Director of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). She visited Japan on the occasion of the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9). The meeting was also attended by Dr. Yvonne Pinto, Director-General of the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI); Mr. André Zandstra, Global Director of the Innovative Finance and Resource Mobilization, CGIAR; Dr. Ruth Musila, Senior Research Scientist at the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO); and Dr. Masa Iwanaga, Special Advisor of the Japan International Research Center for Agricultural Sciences (JIRCAS). The overview is as follows:

  1. At the outset, State Minister Miyaji expressed his appreciation for their participation in TICAD 9 and stated that, building on the discussions at this roundtable, we would like to further enhance its cooperation with CGIAR. He also conveyed his expectation that CGIAR’s initiatives would contribute to addressing challenges in the global agricultural sector.
  2. In response, Dr. Elouafi outlined the CGAIR’s current activities and research. In addition, each attendee respectively shared their initiatives. Following this, both sides shared the same understanding that research and development in the agricultural field contributing to food security and cooperation and collaboration with the private sector are important. Both sides concurred on further strengthening cooperation with Japan.
