Exchanging Opinions between State Minister KUNIMITSU and Mr. Sands, Executive Director of the Global Fund

On December 5, from 3:00 p.m. for approximately 20 minutes, State Minister for Foreign Affairs KUNIMITSU Ayano received a courtesy call by Mr. Peter Sands, Executive Director of the Global Fund. The overview is as follows:

  1. At the outset, State Minister KUNIMITSU welcomed Mr. Sands’ visit to Japan on the occasion of the UHC High-Level Forum being held in Tokyo. She stated that Japan values the role the Global Fund has played in addressing HIV, Tubeculosis, and Malaria and in strengthening health systems. She also stated that global health is also essential for Japan’s health and medical security, and that Japan upholds the realization of “Human Security,” including the achievement of universal health coverage (UHC), as a key guiding principle.
  2. In response, Executive Director Sands expressed his appreciation for Japan’s longstanding contributions to the Global Fund and provided an overview of the Fund’s future plans and activities.
  3. Taking into account the current international situation surrounding global health, both sides concurred that addressing HIV, Tubeculosis, and Malaria and establishing resilient and sustainable health systems remain pressing issues, and confirmed that Japan and the Global Fund will continue to work together toward the achievement of UHC.
