On September 21, commencing at 11:10 a.m. for approximately 3 minutes, Mr. KISHIDA Fumio, Prime Minister of Japan, attended the UN General Assembly High-Level Meeting on UHC. In addition to Mr. Kishida, Mr. Dennis Francis, President of the 78th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, Ms. Amina Mohammed, the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations and Dr. Axel van Trotsenburg, the World Bank’s Senior Managing Director, among others, participated in this High-Level Meeting.

  1. At the High-Level Meeting, Prime Minister Kishida stressed that Japan has been leading discussions on achieving UHC, and stated that the leaders committed to achieving more resilient, equitable and sustainable UHC through strengthening health systems at the G7 Hiroshima Summit.
  2. Prime Minister Kishida further stated that Japan is also determined to lead the efforts by the international community to achieve UHC by 2030 for the entire world, including with developing countries, and stressed the importance for the world leaders to demonstrate the determination to cooperate together to achieve UHC.
  3. At the High-Level-Meeting, the leaders endorsed the Political Declaration. This Political Declaration, in line with the Political Declaration previously endorsed in 2019, highlighted the importance of such issues as promoting primary health care (PHC), tackling communicable and non-communicable diseases including mental health conditions and improving access to health services and demonstrated strong political-level commitments, in order to accelerate progress towards the achievement of UHC by 2030 and to build a healthier world for all.
