The Gavi COVAX Advance Market Commitment (AMC) Summit 2022
On April 8, commencing at 7PM (Japan time), for approximately 2 hours, the Gavi COVAX Advance Market Commitment (AMC) Summit 2022 was held, co-hosted by the Governments of Germany, Indonesia, Senegal, and Ghana, together with Gavi. Prime Minister Kishida Fumio attended, via video message.
- In order to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Gavi COVAX AMC Summit 2022 was held to ensure equitable access to safe, effective, and quality-assured vaccines in developing countries. Participants of the Summit include leaders and ministers from 24 countries, such as H.E. Olaf Schulz, Chancellor of Germany, H.E. Joko Widodo, President of Indonesia, H.E. Macky Sall, President of Senegal, H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E. Sheikh Hasina, Prime Minister of Bangladesh, H.E. Najla Bouden, Prime Minister of Tunisia, the Right Honourable Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada and the Honorable Antony Blinken, Secretary of State of the United States of America. Representatives of international organizations such as H.E. António Guterres, United Nations Secretary-General, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General, and representatives of civil society and private sector, including the Gates Foundation, have also participated in the event.
- Prime Minister Kishida pointed out in his message that there still remains a "vaccine equity gap" in the world, and called for solidarity among the international community to ensure equitable access to vaccines in every country and region of the world, and thereby truly overcome the COVID-19. He announced that taking into account the circumstances surrounding this replenishment and relevant efforts, Japan pledges to contribute up to 500 million USD to COVAX in addition to the contribution of 1 billion dollars that it has already disbursed. Prime Minister Kishida also reiterated Japan’s determination to continue to lead international efforts to achieve universal health coverage.
- During the Summit, many additional pledges were announced from governments and the private sector. As a result, Gavi tentatively announced that commitments valued at 4.8 billion USD have been secured.
[Note] COVAX Facility (COVID-19 Vaccine Global Access Facility)
The COVAX Facility is a comprehensive mechanism for resource mobilization and supply coordination led by Gavi. It aims to secure equitable access to vaccines regardless of income levels. COVAX enables supply of COVID-19 vaccines swiftly at an affordable price, leveraging economies of scale through guaranteeing purchase and market demand for vaccine. Of these, the Advance Market Commitment (AMC) requires to raise at least 5.2 billion USD in urgent financial support.
