Logo for the 48th Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting (ATCM48)

All media representatives wishing to cover the 48th Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting (ATCM48) to be held from 11th to 21st May 2026 are required to apply for and obtain official ATCM48 Media ID.

1. Scheduled Dates and Locations for Media Coverage

Media coverage will be available on the following dates and at the following locations.

(1) Dates

  • -Tuesday, 12 th May, 2026: Opening Ceremony (Meeting Room 1) and a press conference following the ceremony with Francisco Berguño, Executive Secretary of the Antarctic Treaty Secretariat, and Hideki Uyama, Chair of ATCM48 (Press Conference Room)
  • -Thursday, 21st May, 2026: Press conference following the closing ceremony with Francisco Berguño, Secretary-General of the Convention, and Hideki Uyama, Chair of ATCM48 (Press Conference Room)

(2) Venue

Hiroshima International Conference Center

(Note) The above is a tentative schedule as of now. Detailed coverage times, coverage content, and specific locations within the venue will be communicated individually to those who have obtained press credentials as soon as they are finalized.

2. Application Procedures

Documents required for Media Accreditation

  • a scanned letter with the official letterhead of a media organization, signed by the Editor-in-chief, Bureau Chief or Commissioning Editor, specifying the name, functional title and email address of the attendee (unsigned letters or e-mails without a scanned letter attached, will not be accepted);
  • Media Accreditation Form (see attached) (Word);
  • a scan of a valid professional press card; and
  • a front facing, passport sized color photograph

3. Deadline for Applications

The documents mentioned above should be submitted by e-mail to the ATCM48 Secretariat (atcm48#mofa.go.jp) by Friday 8th May, 2026.

4. Issuance of Media ID

If the applications are approved, applicants will receive a confirmation e-mail from the ATCM48 Host Country Secretariat. Media ID can be collected at the entrance onsite upon presentation of two forms of photo ID (passport, official national press pass, driver’s license, work ID, etc.). On-site accreditation is not possible.

5. Visas

Caution: Application for and issue of Media ID do NOT guarantee the acquisition of a visa or entry into Japan. Entry visas are NOT issued at any Japanese airport on arrival. Therefore, every media representative is required to obtain visas in advance. For visa information, please contact the Embassy or Consulate of Japan in your country/area.
