Courtesy Call on State Minister for Foreign Affairs KUNIMITSU Ayano by Ms. Mafalda Duarte, Executive Director of the Green Climate Fund

On August 28, from 11:30 a.m. for approximately 30 minutes, Ms. KUNIMITSU Ayano, State Minister for Foreign Affairs received a courtesy call from Ms. Mafalda Duarte, Executive Director of the Green Climate Fund (GCF), who is currently visiting Japan.
- State Minister Kunimitsu stated that climate change is an urgent challenge common to all humankind, intensifying natural disasters around the world among others, and that the GCF has a significant role to play. She also expressed appreciation for the GCF's ongoing efforts to leverage public finance to attract private investment, thereby achieving greater impact more efficiently, for the large-scale projects being implemented by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and Japanese private financial institutions as GCF Accredited Entities, and for the progress of reforms led by Executive Director Duarte.
- In response, Executive Director Duarte expressed her gratitude for Japan's continued and substantial support as a major donor and Board Member of the GCF. She also outlined the GCF's reform efforts for more effective and efficient operations and explained that the GCF is prioritizing support for vulnerable countries, including Small Island Developing States. She further expressed her intention to strengthen these initiatives.
- State Minister Kunimitsu and Executive Director Duarte exchanged views on topics including strengthening the presence of Japanese staff members at the GCF Secretariat. The two sides agreed to strengthen cooperation between Japan and the GCF, including through collaboration with JICA and Japanese companies.
