Mr. KISHIDA Fumio’s Visit to Indonesia, as Special Envoy of the Prime Minister

From 3 to 7 May, Mr. KISHIDA Fumio, a Member of the House of Representatives, visited the Republic of Indonesia and Malaysia as Special Envoy of the Prime Minister and Supreme Advisor to the Parliamentary Association of Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC), with members of the Parliamentary Association of AZEC. The overview of their visit to Indonesia from 3 to 5 May is as follows.

- On 4 May (local time), Mr. KISHIDA Fumio, Special Envoy of the Prime Minister, held a meeting with H.E. Mr. Prabowo Subianto, President of the Republic of Indonesia. Mr. KISHIDA handed over theletter from Prime Minister ISHIBA Shigeru to President Prabowo, then explained about the establishment of the Parliamentary Association of AZEC in order to further promote cooperation under AZEC and shared his determination to continue to develop AZEC with Indonesia. Furthermore, Mr. KISHIDA stated Japan’s intention to contribute to meeting Asia’s demand for funds worth of JPY 4 trillion through Japanese technology and finance, and requested that President Prabowo attend the next AZEC Leaders Meeting. In response, President Prabowo, welcoming Mr. KISHIDA, stated that he recognized the importance of decarbonization and energy transition and would like to continue to cooperate bilaterally.
Moreover, in relation to the world economic situation, Mr. KISHIDA stated that, as Japan has been traditionally emphasizing, Japan continues its cooperation towards maintaining and strengthening a free and open international order based on the rule of law and the multilateral free trading system. The two leaders also discussed the impact of U.S. tariff measures and following exchanges of retaliation between the U.S. and China on the world economy and the multilateral free trade system.

- On 5 May (local time), Mr. KISHIDA Fumio held a meeting with H.E. Dr. Airlangga Hartarto, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia. Mr. KISHIDA and Coordinating Minister Airlangga welcomed the progress of the project concerning Muara Laboh Geothermal Power Plant. They shared the view to strengthen cooperation in areas such as the Legok-Nangka Waste to Energy Project, Java-Sumatra Power Grid, hydrogen and ammonia, sustainable fuel, and LNG. In response, Coordinating Minister Airlangga, also welcoming Mr. KISHIDA, stated that he recognized the importance of AZEC and would like to continue to cooperate.

- Additionally, on 5 May (local time), Mr. KISHIDA Fumio held a meeting with H.E. Dr. KAO Kim Hourn, Secretary General of ASEAN. Mr. KISHIDA mentioned that he established the Parliamentary Association of AZEC in order to further promote cooperation under AZEC, and the two exchanged views towards decarbonization in Asia. Moreover, the two discussed the impact of U.S. tariff measures and following exchanges of retaliation between the U.S. and China on the world economy and the multilateral free trade system.

- Other than the above, during his stay in the Republic of Indonesia, Mr. KISHIDA Fumio visited the Asia Zero Emission Centre located within the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA) and exchanged views with its associates; visited, and exchanged views with, Delta Mas Industrial Center; and held exchange of views with Japanese Energy companies.
