Launch of the region-wide co-creation for common agenda initiative for Mozambique, Malawi and Zambia: “Strengthening the Global Supply Chain through Nacala Corridor Development”
August 20, 2025
On the 20th, Mr. ISHIBA Shigeru, Prime Minister of Japan, announced the launch of the region-wide co-creation for common agenda initiative for Mozambique, Malawi and Zambia titled “Strengthening the Global Supply Chain through Nacala Corridor Development”, on the occasion of the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9).
- The Nacala Corridor is an international corridor located in southeastern Africa, connecting the landlocked countries such as Zambia and Malawi to the Indian Ocean via Nacara port in Mozambique. Japan has been supporting the development of the Nacala Corridor, including through the Nacala Port Development Project funded by yen loan and completed in October 2023. The cargo handling volume at Nacala Port has been increasing steadily, and the importance of the Nacala Corridor as a transportation route in southern Africa has grown significantly. However, to further utilize the corridor, improving connectivity with inland areas remains a key challenge. Furthermore, the region surrounding the Nacala Corridor are endowed with abundant mineral resources and arable land, and, from the view point of fully utilizing the potential of the region, there are high expectations for improvement of the technical standard of mineral exploration and mining as well as enhancement of agricultural productivity.
- This initiative aims to improve and strengthen transportation infrastructure and promote industrial development in the Nakara Corridor region. This is expected to strengthen connectivity within the region and enhance the value of the corridor as a transportation route for mineral resources and other goods, thereby achieving sustainable development through promoting investment and creating employment in the region. The initiative is also expected to strengthen Japan's global supply chains related to various resources.
- Together with the Economic Region Initiative of Indian Ocean – Africa, Japan will promote the development of the Nacala Corridor in cooperation with third countries outside Africa, while also drawing on the ideas of various stakeholders, including private companies, international organizations, and civil society, thereby further deepening relations with Mozambique, Malawi, and Zambia.
