On July 16 in Tokyo, Mr. TSUGE Yoshifumi, State Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, and Hon. Kalani Radford KANEKO, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI), signed and exchanged notes for “The Project for the Reconstruction of Amata Kabua International Airport Passenger Terminal (Detailed Design)” and “the Economic and Social Development Programme” (project of up to eight hundred and sixteen million yen).
- Outline of Projects is as follows;
- “The Project for the Reconstruction of Amata Kabua International Airport Passenger Terminal (Detailed Design)” (up to one hundred and sixteen million yen)
Amata Kabua International Airport is located in Majuro, the capital of the RMI. It serves as the main gateway between the capital and the rest of the country and abroad. However, the existing passenger terminal building has been used for about 50 years since the airport opened in 1971 and has deteriorated significantly over time. In order to accommodate the expected increase in the number of passengers, it is essential to expand the terminal building.
This cooperation is expected to strengthen the foundation for the RMI’s economic growth by constructing a new passenger terminal building and providing airport-related equipment. Under this cooperation, the funds will be provided for the detailed design of the airport. - “The Economic and Social Development Programme (Fishery Research Vessel)” (up to seven hundred million yen)
This cooperation aims to promote sustainable fisheries development in theRMI, one of the Pacific islands countries where the fisheries industry is an essential source of income, by providing fisheries research vessel and other equipment to be used to confirm increases and decreases in the volume and distribution of fisheries resources in a sustainable manner.
