United Nations Secretary-General Guterres to Visit Japan

- Secretary-General Guterres is scheduled to attend the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Ceremony on August 6. On this occasion, H.E. Mr. KISHIDA Fumio, Prime Minister of Japan, is scheduled to hold a meeting with Secretary-General Guterres. The fact that Secretary-General Guterres will attend the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Ceremony and have a meeting with Prime Minister Kishida in Hiroshima is of importance in communicating the realities of atomic bombings to the world.
- After a series of events in Hiroshima the Secretary-General is scheduled to visit Tokyo where he will have a meeting with Mr. HAYASHI Yoshimasa, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan.
- It is expected that Secretary-General Guterres’ visit to Japan will further deepen the cooperative relationship between Japan and the UN.

Secretary-General Guterres will be visiting Japan for the fifth time as UN Secretary-General.
This will be the first time in 12 years that a UN Secretary-General is attending the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Ceremony since then UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon attended on August 6, 2010. Secretary-General Guterres has visited the Nagasaki Peace Memorial Ceremony in August 2018 but has not visited the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Ceremony.
