Japan and the United Nations

From April 27 to 28, Dr. KUNIMITSU Ayano, State Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, who was visiting the United States (New York), attended the UN Security Council High-Level Open Debate and held meetings with UN officials and others. The overview is as follows:

1. Attendance in the Security Council High-Level Open Debate

On April 27, State Minister KUNIMITSU, attended the High-Level Open Debate on "Safety and Protection of Waterways in the Ocean," hosted by Bahrain as chair, and delivered a statement on behalf of the Government of Japan.

2. Meetings with UN Officials and Others

(1) Meeting with H.E. Mr. António Manuel de Oliveira Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations

On April 28, State Minister KUNIMITSU held a meeting with H.E. Mr. António Manuel de Oliveira Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations.
State Minister KUNIMITSU stated that this year marks the 70th anniversary of Japan's admission to the UN and that Japan’s commitment to multilateralism with the UN at its core remains unwavering. In response, Secretary-General Guterres expressed his gratitude for Japan's longstanding support for the UN and both confirmed that Japan and the UN will continue to cooperate closely.

(2) Meeting with Ms. Rosemary DiCarlo, Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs of the United Nations

On April 27, State Minister KUNIMITSU held a meeting with Ms. Rosemary DiCarlo, Under Secretary General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs of the United Nations. They exchanged views on regional situations, including North Korea and Iran, and discussed cooperation with the UN towards contributing to international peace and security, and reaffirmed their cooperation.

(3) Dialogue with Japanese staff members of international organizations

On April 28, State Minister KUNIMITSU exchanged views with Japanese staff members of international organizations in NY. State Minister KUNIMITSU expressed her respect and gratitude for the Japanese staff members who are playing active roles in the international organizations and exchanged views with them on Japan's efforts in international organizations, among other topics.
