Courtesy Call on Chief Cabinet Secretary HAYASHI by Chair of Intergovernmental Negotiation on Security Council Reform (IGN)

On March 24, 2025, commencing at 14:05 pm, for approximately 20 minutes, Mr. HAYASHI Yoshimasa, Chief Cabinet Secretary, received a courtesy call from H.E. Ambassador Tareq M. A. M. Al Banai, Permanent Representative of the State of Kuwait to the United Nations (UN), Chair of Intergovernmental Negotiation on Security Council Reform (IGN), who is visiting Japan at the invitation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The overview of the meeting is as follows.
- At the outset, Chief Cabinet Secretary Hayashi welcomed the visit of Ambassador AlBanai to Japan and stated that the Japanese government is taking a whole-of-government approach to makes serious efforts in strengthening the functions of the United Nations, including Security Council reform. Furthermore, he stated that Japan and G4(Japan, Brazil, Germany and India) will continue to engage actively and constructively in efforts towards reform.
- In response, Ambassador AlBanai expressed his gratitude for the invitation and stated that he will further strengthen cooperation with Japan on issues in the international arena including Security Council reform.
- Both sides shared the view that, as this year marks the 80th anniversary of the United Nations, concrete progress of Security Council reform is needed, and concurred that they will continue to work together.
- In addition, taking this opportunity, both sides discussed the international situation including the situation in the Middle East.
